Hypertension
What is it?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the increased pressure of blood pumping throughout your entire body. There are different types of hypertension such as essential hypertension and secondary hypertension but they are all characterized a blood pressure that is consistently far above normal.¹ Why does it matter? Hypertension, if left untreated, can damage your brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs over time. Uncontrolled blood pressure can also lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and even vascular dementia. While this may sound intimidating, there are many ways including lifestyle changes and anti-hypertensive medications to get your blood pressure under control.¹ How can Detroit VITALS help? Pre-diabetes & Diabetes
What is it?
Prediabetes is a condition in which someone’s glucose (sugar) levels in the blood are higher than normal, which indicates that diabetes may develop in the near future. Prediabetes often leads to the most common class of diabetes which is Type II Diabetes, a chronic disease where insulin no longer works and blood sugar remains high.² Why does it matter? Both Prediabetes and Type II Diabetes are serious conditions caused by genetic and lifestyle factors that should be treated in order to prevent further complications like heart disease and chronic kidney disease.² How can Detroit VITALS help? Detroit VITALS offers low cost blood work to screen for diabetes. Prediabetes can be improved before it progresses to diabetes with changes to your lifestyle, and Detroit VITALS can help you pursue these lifestyle changes. Obesity
What is it?
Obesity is a disease characterized by an excessive amount of body fat that disrupts the body’s normal function. Obesity is typically caused by a range of factors including genetics, lifestyle, and one’s environment. A combination of a lack of physical activity, a high calorie/low nutrient diet, and a lack of sleep often contributes to obesity.³ Why does it matter? The development of obesity often leads to other high-risk diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, digestive issues, and heart disease. Along with the development of more physical health problems, obesity can also impact a patient’s mental well-being, with studies showing links of obesity to depression.⁴ To avoid these health impacts of obesity, treatment may be necessary.⁴ How can Detroit VITALS help? Upper Extremity injury
What is it?
Upper extremity injuries are injuries occurring to the upper limbs, including the shoulder, arm, wrist, & hand. Within a person’s daily activities, such injuries can commonly occur, especially during exercise or heavy lifting. These types of injuries typically occur in two ways: during a specific event/activity or when that part of the upper limb has been overworked for a long period of time.⁵ Why does it matter? If upper extremities have been injured, inflammation, pain, and muscle, bone, tendon, or ligament injury may occur. This may impede everyday activities like lifting moderate weight or doing yard work. Treatment can help you make the quickest recovery.⁵ How can Detroit VITALS help? High Cholesterol
What is it?
Hypercholesterolemia, or high cholesterol, is defined as an increase in fats, such as cholesterol and other lipids, within an individual’s bloodstream. This is usually diagnosed through a blood test called a lipid panel. There are many variables that can lead to high cholesterol but a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are known causes.⁶ Why does it matter? Having high cholesterol may increase an individual's cardiovascular health which can potentially lead to many complications.⁶ How can Detroit VITALS help?
